  • Human Society and its Environment (HSIE) is the key learning area (KLA) in which students develop knowledge, understandings, skills, attitudes and values about peoples and their social, cultural and physical environments.

Students learn about the peoples of Australia and other parts of the world; and the social, cultural and physical environments in which they live.

    • HSIE K-6 draws on history, geography, economics, anthropology, political science, environmental studies, Aboriginal studies, religious studies and sociology (HSIE Syllabus p. 9)

The HSIE syllabus replaced what was previously known as Social Studies some years ago.

  • HSIE K-6 Syllabus
The NSW Board of Studies HSIE K-6 Syllabus(p.8) states that the aim is to develop in students the values and attitudes, skills, knowledge and understandings that:

    • enhance their sense of personal, community, national and global identity.

    • enable them to participate effectively in maintaining and improving the quality of their society and environment.

The content is drawn from many sources, including recent research into historical and geographical thinking in young children and into the development of civic participation skills and citizenship ideals.

The syllabus is divided into four knowledge and understandings strands:

    • Change and continuity - significant events and people; time and change

    • Cultures - identities; cultural diversity

    • Environments - patterns of place and location; relationships with places

    • Social Systems and Structures - resource systems; roles, rights and responsibilities.

The syllabus develops students' skills in:

    • acquiring information

    • using an inquiry process

    • social and civic participation.

HSIE contributes to the development of skills common to other KLAs such as reading, writing, graphing, designing and making, and visually representing an idea or view point.

The syllabus fosters in students informed and responsible attitudes towards people, cultures, religions, societies, environments and learning. It develops a commitment to:

    • social justice

    • intercultural understanding

    • ecological sustainability

    • democratic processes

    • beliefs and moral codes

    • lifelong learning.
    • Syllabus content is inclusive of all learners. It incorporates gender, Aboriginal, citizenship, multicultural, environmental, work and global perspectives. It includes Asian studies where appropriate. Students are encouraged to develop positive values and attitudes about themselves, others, the world that they live in, and the future.
  • Syllabus content units of work

The HSIE K-6 syllabus contains units of work that are organised from Early Stage 1 to Stage 3. Each teaching unit contains teaching notes, learning experiences and outcomes. The units of work are not mandatory and schools adapt the units according to the needs of their students.
